Best time to visit Vietnam
Weather and climateThe best time to visit Vietnam is between December and April, when you tend to get the least rain and the best weather conditions across the whole country. Stretching for more than 1,600km, with three separate climates ranging from temperate to tropical, the weather can vary dramatically from north to south – it’s not unheard of to have snow in the mountains of the far north, and temperatures above 30C in the beaches at the southern tip.
If you’re only planning to visit one part of Vietnam, you’ll have more flexibility about when to travel, but if you’re hoping to get a taste of the whole country, the peak months of March and April top the list of when to go to Vietnam.

February Half Term
South
February is a great time to explore Vietnam, especially areas in the South including Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and the Mekong Delta. Throughout these regions, you will experience warm, dry weather with temperatures hovering around 27°C, making it ideal for outdoor activities. Ride through the buzzing streets of Saigon, visit the Cu Chi Tunnels, or drift along the Mekong’s maze of canals on a traditional sampan. If you’re looking for some beach time, Phu Quoc Island is sunny and calm this time of year.
Central
Central Vietnam, including places like Hoi An and Da Nang, also enjoys comfortable temperatures and dry weather during this period. There may be the occasional shower, but they’re generally short-lived, and the sunshine soon returns. For families who love the outdoors, February is a great time to visit Phong Nha. This national park is home to some of the world’s largest and impressive caves, and the dry weather makes it an ideal time to explore. Families can kayak along underground rivers, take a boat ride deep inside the caves, or tackle an obstacle course over the water – perfect for adventurous kids who don’t mind getting wet!
North
The North is cooler, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C, so it’s best to pack an extra layer. Cities like Hanoi are still full of life and you can explore markets, try the traditional egg coffee, or watch a local puppet show. February is also a great time to take an overnight cruise in Bai Tu Long Bay or head to the scenic countryside of Ninh Binh.
Easter Holidays
South
Easter is one of the best times to visit Southern Vietnam, with dry, sunny days and temperatures between 28-32°C. In Saigon, it’s a great time to wander around the temples, markets and parks or visit the floating markets on the Mekong Delta.
Central
Central Vietnam is the ideal region during Easter, with warm temperatures, plenty of sunshine and family-friendly activities. In Hoi An, introduce your family to Vietnamese cuisine with an interactive cooking class or visit the golden bridge nestled in the Ba Na Hills. For a meaningful family experience, head to Hue, where you can join a local family on their farm. You’ll help with traditional farming techniques and cook up a delicious lunch together.
North
In March and April, when Easter usually falls, Northern Vietnam is mild, dry and perfect for sightseeing. In Hanoi, discover the flavours of this region on a street food safari and take a stroll around Hoen Kiem Lake. Journey into rural Vietnam and visit Mai Chau or Pu Luong, local villages that are generally less busy than Mountainous Sapa, with bamboo houses, rice fields and beautiful natural landscapes.

Summer Holidays (July and August)
South
Southern Vietnam is hot and humid, with regular tropical downpours that are usually short but intense. You can still explore Saigon or take a boat trip along the Mekong Delta, but it’s not the best time for a beach stay, as Phu Quoc is in the middle of its rainy season.
Central
If you’re heading to Vietnam during the summer months, the central regions are your best bet for sunshine. With high temperatures, dry conditions and plenty of open space to enjoy. Base yourself in Hoi An or Da Nang for easy beach access and family-friendly hotels with swimming pools. You can explore the nearby rice paddies by bike, take a river cruise or discover amazing wildlife in the nearby Son Tra Nature Reserve.
North
Northern Vietnam is hot and humid over the summer, with bursts of rain, making this the period with the greenest landscapes. The heat in Hanoi can be intense, so take it slow with early morning walks and find a shady cafe to unwind. Further north, Sapa and Ha Giang have incredible mountain views, with local villages waiting to be explored, although the trails can become quite muddy, so they are more suitable for older children or teenagers. Ninh Binh is a great option with younger kids as the boat rides aren’t too long, and there are plenty of gentle walks and dramatic scenery to soak in.
October Half Term
South
October marks the start of the dry season in the south. You may get a shower or two earlier in the month, but by the end, it’s usually sunny and settled again. This is a great time to explore Saigon and the Mekong Delta, where the countryside is still lush green from the rainy season. Phu Quoc is a great option for some beach days at the end of your trip.
Central
Unfortunately, October is the wettest month in this region. Hoi An, Hue and Da Nang can be hit with heavy rain and sometimes flooding, making it less than ideal for families. If you’re planning a trip here, it’s best to wait until later in the year when the weather improves.
North
October is one of the best times to visit the North, with dry and warm weather and temperatures in the low to mid-20s. Explore Hanoi on foot, try a cooking class or take a family-friendly walking tour. Cruise the calm waters of Bai Tu Long Bay and head further inland for more stunning landscapes in Ninh Binh and Mai Chau.

Christmas Holidays
South
For a festive family escape, December in the south is warm, dry and sunny and an ideal time to visit this region. Swap turkey for tropical fruit with a beach stay on Phu Quoc Island, where you can swim, snorkel and relax by the sea. In Saigon, you’ll find Christmas lights and lively markets, and the Mekong Delta is peaceful and laid-back, perfect for relaxing at the end of the year.
Central
The weather is changeable in December. Although you may get lucky with a dry spell, there is a fair chance of rain, especially earlier in the month. If you decide to visit during this time, Hoi An is a lovely place to be at Christmas, with the lanterns and riverside cafes brightly lit – but it is a gamble weather-wise.
North
In December, it’s cool and dry in the north, with daytime temperatures around 15-20°C – ideal for exploring the cities and the countryside. Celebrate Christmas in Hanoi, where you’ll find decorations, festival treats and plenty to explore. A trip to Bai Tu Long Bay feels calm and fresh this time of year, with still waters and cooler air temperatures. For a slower pace, head to the countryside in Mai Chau, where you will find stilt houses, mountain views and home-cooked meals shared with your hosts.
