Vive Vientiane

Bite-sized trip
  • Itinerary:
    Vientiane
  • Duration:
    3 days / 2 nights (flexible)
  • Price:
From £ 119.- per person (excluding flights)
  • When to go:
    November - May
Explore Vientiane, a sleepy, scenic capital curled around a bend in the Mekong River, packed with tuk-tuks, French bakeries and friendly wandering monks. Tuck into tasty Laotian cuisine, watch daily life unfold over a croissant in a pavement cafe and stroll along the river front. Vientiane feels more like a village than a capital city, with laid-back locals and a languid pace of life. A former French trading post, it’s filled with shady, tree-lined avenues, frangipani blossoms and the lingering scent of freshly baked bread.
Vientiane Laos

Day 1 – Arrival in Vientiane

On arrival in Vientiane, you’ll be transferred to your quirky modern hotel in the centre of Vientiane, with panoramic views over the rushing Mekong River. From the hotel, it’s just a short walk to the morning market and some of the best restaurants in town. Sitting by the river, Beer Lao in hand, it’s hard to believe that you’re in a capital city. You’ll notice French-style patisseries and bakeries sprinkled throughout the streets, so be sure to pick up a pain au chocolat.

Day 2 – Street food discovery tour

Today you will discover Laos through its food! Start with a traditional coffee and walk through the local market with your guide. Learn about the fresh herbs and ingredients and how they are used as you take in the aromatic smells. Head to a nearby restaurant to see how traditional dishes are made and sample some Kao Piak soup and Papaya salad. Next up, dessert – one of the best ice cream shops in Vientiane dating back 40 years. The ice cream is homemade and typical Lao flavours, including sticky rice. Finish your foodie experience with a cold beer Lao and impressive views over the river.

Day 3 – Departure from Vientiane

This morning, the crowing rooster will probably wake you up early. As such, the Lao’s day starts at sunrise. If you want to stroll around before breakfast, head to the local market and browse among the many souvenirs. Your stay in Vientiane ends here.

A logical continuation of your trip is heading towards northern Laos, Luang Prabang. The new high-speed train takes you to Luang Prabang in about two hours. Instead, if you want to see more of the countryside, we’ll arrange a bus for you; this will probably take all day.
