Train tracks to Laos
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – From Bangkok to Khmer temples
Today you’ll travel by train to Isaan. From Bangkok, it takes about four hours, or roughly an hour and a half from Khao Yai, with stunning views of rural Thailand unfolding along the way. You’ll pass through small villages, lush green rice fields, and dusty roads where farmers tend their land. Upon arrival in Sikhiu, a driver will take you to a hidden gem nestled among the rice fields. You’ll be met for a freshly prepared and authentic lunch. As you savour the delicious food, your guide will share their insights about rice cultivation and rural life.
Phanom Rung
After lunch, you’ll continue your journey by car, weaving along narrow roads and through quaint villages until you reach the majestic Phanom Rung temple complex. Once a part of the Khmer Empire, this ancient site bears a striking resemblance to the iconic Angkor Wat temples. Dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, the complex represents Mount Kailash, the sacred mountain in Hindu mythology. Perched atop an extinct volcano and surrounded by vast rice fields, it offers a serene and historical experience. This area once formed part of the “Royal Way,” linking Phanom Rung to Angkor Wat. Take your time to wander through this remarkable heritage site. As the day winds down, you’ll arrive at a charming boutique guesthouse, where the warm hospitality of your Thai hosts allows you to fully unwind.
Day 2 – Cycling through Isaan
The following day will start with an active adventure as you hop on a bike to explore the charming countryside of Isaan. Your guesthouse will provide you with bikes, a map of a suggested route, and insights into the area. Pedal at your own pace through rural landscapes, uncovering local crafts, traditional village life, and the stunning ruins of Prasat Muang Tam, another gem of Khmer architecture. Midway through your journey, take a break at a traditional Thai café for a delicious local lunch and soak in the tranquil ambiance. You can then either spend the afternoon cycling further or simply relax back at the guesthouse.
Day 3 – Cooking Thai-style
Ask anyone in Bangkok what their favourite Thai dish is, and the answer is often: from Isaan! Today you’ll step into the kitchen with a local chef who will guide you through preparing classic regional dishes like papaya salad, grilled chicken, and spicy delicacies. Learn the secrets of these bold flavours while creating an unforgettable lunch to enjoy. In the afternoon, you’ll journey to Korat, where you’ll check in and have time to explore the vibrant centre. Visit the Ya Mo monument, a tribute to the legendary Grandma Mo, a Siamese heroine who defended her city against Laotian invaders. Korat offers a lively atmosphere with its charming square, inviting bars, and bustling evening market, perfect for sampling street food. There are plenty of tuk-tuks around for a quick and fun way to navigate the city.
Day 4 – Venturing over to Laos

Board the 06:20 train to Nong Khai, a six-hour ride that will get you there for around 12:20. From Nong Khai station, hop on the shuttle train to Thanalaeng station on the Lao side of the border.
