Day 1 – From Ubon Ratchathani to Khong Chiam

Today you will head into to the heart of Isaan, a relatively unknown part of Eastern Thailand. If you’re coming from Bangkok you will travel either by overnight train or flight and if necessary we can plan an extra night in Ubon Ratchathani, so that you have time for the journey to Khong Chiam. Once here, the journey into Isaan is around two hours, where you will catch the boat and sail across the Mekong, an experience you won’t forget. The next stop is Kaeng Sam Phang Bok park, where over hundreds of years, the Mekong has eroded the rocks to create huge potholes which is a bizarre but beautiful sight to see. On the way to your hotel, you’ll stop at a dragon temple which is home to the largest gong in the world! You’ll arrive at your hotel by late afternoon, with time to take a dip in the pool and enjoy the stunning views over the Mekong with a cold drink.

Your accommodation in Kong Chiam

The great thing about your accommodation in Kong Chiam is the collaboration with the community. The owner of the hotel will gladly give you a tour and tell you all about the traditions and crafts of this region. The owner comes from the region herself and has returned from Bangkok to create employment here and to ensure that the local population has a chance to develop.

Day 2 – Unique rock formations in Pha Taem National Park

The following day, you’ll visit Pha Taem National Park, where you will be wowed 3,000 year-old rock carvings and mushroom rocks. You can explore the park on a 5km hike that takes you past many petroglyphs, under protruding rock points and through insane vistas. Once you’ve completed the walk, your driver will take you to the Laos border. You can walk through customs and get an ‘exit’ stamp in your passport. You will then get your visa and head into Laos for your next destination.
