The green hills of Pai
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – Arrival in Pai
The journey from Chiang Mai to Pai is an adventure in itself, heading along the Mae Hong Son loop you’ll encounter winding mountain roads and beautiful views all around. The first hour is quite relaxed, with the bends increasing after this, but the views will be worth it. After around three hours you will arrive in the small laid-back town of Pai, nestled in a valley along the river and surrounded by lush mountains. When you reach your hotel, you will find spacious rooms, a lovely refreshing swimming pool and fresh breakfast each morning. Your hotel is within walking distance of Walking Street, where you can grab a bite to eat and explore as a family.
Highlights around Pai
Located just outside the town of Pai, Pai Canyon (Kong Lan) is a striking natural wonder that features dramatic landscapes, narrow ridges and panoramic views. If you’re seeking adventure, explore the maze of narrow, elevated trails created from erosion over centuries, but take care if you are walking on narrow paths. The sweeping views over the canyon are incredible and show the contrast between the rocky cliffs and the surrounding lush greenery, which are particularly beautiful during sunrise and sunset.
Another highlight is The Memorial Bridge, which the Japanese used to transport supplies and troops between Thailand and Myanmar during the Second World War. The bridge was initially constructed of bamboo but after being destroyed in the war, it has since been reconstructed using iron and steel and its appearance is comparable to the famous bridge over the River Kwai. Crossing the Pai River, you will enjoy scenic views of the surrounding countryside including local villages, farms and lush mountains. Another bridge to visit is the Bamboo Bridge. This one was built above the green rice fields, where you can observe the local farmers harvesting rice while monks make their way to the temples. Or to get their alms (food, drinks and donations).
Finally, the striking Big Buddha cannot be missed. The white Buddha statue, known locally as Phra Buddha Khodom, is large and gleaming white and creates a strong contrast against the vibrant, lush green hills of Pai. If you climb to the top, you can enjoy fantastic panoramic views and take some time for quiet reflection within this tranquil setting, often used for meditation and contemplation.
Day 2 – Exploring by mountain bike
The following day, you’ll explore the surrounding villages and countryside by bicycle. Starting at a beautiful waterfall where you can have a refreshing dip, you’ll pedal through Lahu and Lisu villages where these ethnic groups live, after fleeing their home countries. Meet the local people and enjoy the stunning mountainous views over Pai. You’ll also make a stop at a temple named Wat Nam Hou which is home to a famous Buddha statue made of wood. When your tour is complete, head back to your hotel and enjoy another evening of blissful laid-back vibes in Pai.
Day 3 – Back to Chiang Mai
After your final breakfast and if your bus is leaving this morning – head to the station and start your journey back to Chiang Mai. If you are booked onto the later bus, you can explore the local markets or even visit the mystical Nam Lod caves if you have time. From Chiang Mai, there are so many beautiful destinations to visit next…if you haven’t already seen the vibrant temples of Chiang Rai they are not to be missed, or if you’re heading back to Bangkok, try heading south for some island hopping.
