Discover the royal city of Sukhothai
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – Travel by train to Sukhothai
Today, you will make your way to Bangkok Train Station, where you will board a train to Phitsanulok. We will arrange your tickets in advance so you can enjoy your journey hassle-free. Leave the hustle and bustle of Bangkok behind as you sit back on the train and enjoy the scenic views of lush mountains, small villages and vast rice paddies – a great way to experience Thailand’s vibrant and diverse landscapes. After around five hours, you will arrive in Phitsanulok, where your driver will be waiting to take you to Sukhothai. It’s around an hour to your accommodation, where you will be staying in a boutique hotel with Thai-style rooms, in the heart of the old city. Relax by the large swimming pool, or enjoy a tasty meal at the on-site restaurant beside the Mae Rampan canal that runs through the property.
Day 2 – Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site
After a delicious breakfast, you can head to the Wat Chang Lom temple which is located adjacent to your hotel, to get your first taste of Sukhothai’s rich cultural heritage. You can then rent a bicycle from your hotel and explore the various temples within the Sukhothai Historical Park. This area is considered to be the ‘cradle’ of Thai civilisation and houses some of the largest and most impressive temple ruins in Thailand. Cycle through the different zones, each containing different temples of significance and relax by the picturesque ponds, ancient trees and well-kept gardens surrounding the ruins. Due to Sukhothai being located off the usual tourist route and further distance from Bangkok, the area is generally less visited when compared to other historical spots in Thailand and places like Angkor Wat, so it’s ideal if you’re seeking a quieter, more authentic experience of Thailand’s cultural history.
Day 3 – Departure from Sukhothai
The following day, it’s time to leave Sukhothai and head on to your next destination in Thailand. Head further North and explore the gateway to Northern Thailand – Chiang Mai where you can volunteer at a rescued elephant sanctuary or stay with a local family from the Karen hill tribe and drift down the river on a bamboo raft. Alternatively, you could travel back to Bangkok and head South to Khao Sok for jungle lake adventures, or choose from our many family-friendly beach stays.
