Tea hills in Sri Lanka

In the hills of Haputale

Bite-sized trip
  • Itinerary:
    Haputale
  • Duration:
    3 days / 2 nights (flexible)
  • Price:
From £ 339.- per person (excluding flights)
Perched in the mountains of Sri Lanka’s ‘hill country’ region, Haputale is surrounded by forest covered hills and lush green tea plantations. It’s a picturesque spot that’s surprisingly off the main tourist radar, and not as busy as the nearby town of Ella. Stroll through the tea plantations, enjoy the scenic views and try your hand at cooking with a local.

Day 1 – Arrival in Haputale

Journey into the hills along winding roads through rolling, green countryside and seemingly endless tea plantations to the small town of Haputale. Your home for the next few days is a boutique property that enjoys fantastic scenic views towards the hills and over the tea fields.

It’s possible to take the train through the Sri Lankan countryside to Haputale. Sharing a carriage with the locals adds to the experience. Ask your Travel Specialist for more information.

Day 2 – Drinking tea & local lunch

Haputale is famous for its tea fields and this morning you’ll learn all about tea production with a visit to the Dambatenne Tea Factory, one of the most well-known tea producers in Sri Lanka. At the end of the tour, you will of course have the chance to sample the world-renowned Ceylon black tea.

After the tour (and a tasting of Lipton’s renowned black tea of course) you’ll be picked up by a tuk tuk and driven the short distance to Lipton’s Seat which offers some impressive views. Take time to enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding tea plantations and valleys, then head back to the tea factory on foot. There’s a downhill trail that leads through the tea plantations and you may spot tea pickers at work.

Time for lunch! In a nearby village, you’ll help prepare a traditional meal from local produce in an outdoor kitchen, which you can then enjoy! Your afternoon is free to relax or explore independently.

Day 3 – Departure

The next day you’ll take in the breathtaking views of Haputale one last time, before heading onwards with your driver to your next destination.
