Dinner with a Sri Lanka family

Eating with a Sri Lankan family

One of the best ways to learn about a country’s culture is through its cuisine and taking part in a cooking class. Even better is to visit a local family and help prepare a traditional meal together. We can arrange this memorable experience in several locations throughout Sri Lanka.

You will be warmly welcomed into your host’s family home. All of the families speak at least a little English, so you can get to know each other as they prepare lunch (or dinner). You can assist if you wish. You may feel a little nervous, but the warm hospitality of your hosts will quickly put you at ease. Once the meal is prepared you will sit together and eat.

For this culinary experience, we work together with a World Fair Trade accredited Social Enterprise that supports families who could use a helping hand. In this way, local families benefit directly from tourism in Sri Lanka. And, in our eyes, it enhances your travel experience, by making a unique connection with local families.

If you have a specific dietary requirement, please let us know in advance, and we will check for you whether one of the families can take this into account.

Experience the life of a tea picker

We can also arrange a unique insight into the life of a Sri Lankan tea picker near Kandy. It’s a tough, physical job with long working hours, in all weathers. After spending time with a tea picker, you’ll have a much greater appreciation of the humble cup of tea. You’ll be picked up from central Kandy and transferred to a tea plantation where you will learn about the tea picking and production process. You’ll be accompanied by a translator who can help you interact with the pickers. Then you will join a tea picker’s family at their home where you can help prepare a traditional meal and sit down with the family to eat.
