Take a trip to the seaside town of Mirissa, between November and April you’ll be in one of the best places in Sri Lanka for whale watching. These mighty marine giants are drawn to the sea trench just off the coast to feed, making your chances of spotting them particularly high. In your free time, you can walk along the soft sands of Mirissa’s crescent bay, crack open a coconut and let your worries drift away.

Day 1 – Arrival in Mirissa

Today you’ll travel to the south coast. Your destination for the next few days is the popular beach resort of Mirissa. You’ll be staying in a small-scale, family friendly hotel with easy access to the palm-fringed beach and places to eat. The sea here can be rough at times, but the property has a swimming pool and there’s plenty of space for the kids to play in the gardens. Time to crack open a coconut and relax!

Day 2 – Whale watching boat trip

Mirissa is one of the best places in Sri Lanka for whale watching (between November and April). Early this morning you’ll be collected from your hotel and taken to Mirissa port where you’ll embark on a half-day whale watching trip with a small group of other international travellers. You’ll have a good chance of spotting the whales as they are drawn to the sea trench just off the coast to feed. You may also see dolphins.

Once you’re back on dry land you’ll be dropped off back at your beachfront accommodation where you can spend the afternoon relaxing whilst your kids play in and around the pool.

Day 3 – Departure from Mirissa

One final dip in the pool and then your driver will take you onto the next stop on your Sri Lanka family adventure. If you’d like to spend a little longer relaxing in Mirissa (who wouldn’t?!), ask your Travel Specialist to add an extra night or two to your travel plan.
