Along the Panorama Route to Kruger
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – Arrival into Hazyview
Today you will drive to Hazyview, where we have arranged for you to stay the night. While this region is best known for its wildlife, there’s plenty to see and do outside the game parks. Travelling along the Panorama Route, you’ll be treated to some of the most incredible views in South Africa and the town of Hazyview is no exception. As the gateway to Kruger National Park, this is the perfect stop on your journey to spot the big five. Your accommodation is a cosy lodge with African-inspired décor and a refreshing swimming pool. Relax at the pool, take in the breathtaking views, or sip wine on the terrace as evening falls.
Day 2 – Highlights on the Panorama Route
Today you will start your self-drive along the Panorama Route. You’ll want to stop to see the mighty Blyde River Canyon, where the water has carved the bizarre Bourke’s Luck Potholes. You might also see the Three Rondavels or the Pinnacle Rock rising out of the green vegetation. As you take in the view, it’s easy to see why this viewpoint is often called ‘God’s Window’. There are plenty of hiking options here, so you may wish to stretch your legs and explore the surrounding natural wonders. At the end of the day, you’ll return to the same cosy lodge for one more night.
Days 3-4 – Private reserve safari
Depart Hazyview and drive to Bush Lodge, located in a private reserve near the town of Hoedspruit, literally on the doorstep of Kruger National Park. Your lodge is set amidst the African bush at the borders of the Big 5 Thornybush and Manyeleti Game Reserves; it is about a two-hour drive from Kruger’s Orpen Gate. You’ll head out each day with a keen-sighted ranger and a limited number of fellow travellers on daily quests to locate the iconic Big 5. In the evening you’ll sleep in one of our preferred small bush camps that offer you an authentic experience in this private game area.
Day 5 – Self-drive through Kruger National Park
Today you will set off on your very own safari through Kruger National Park. Remembering the expert tips from the local guides at the private reserve, you will have a good chance to spot wildlife as you make your journey through the park. At the entrance, pick up a map that will guide you toward the best routes past waterholes, where animals often gather. Later in the afternoon, you will exit the park through one of the southern gates and drive a short distance to your accommodation. You will stay in a small, charming lodge, a short distance from the park entrance, in the quiet town of Komatiepoort or Malelane (depending on availability).
Day 6 – Onward journey
The following day its time to leave Kruger. If you’re yet to explore the Garden Route, take a domestic flight from Nelspruit to Port Elizabeth, pick up a hire car and head south.
