Plettenberg Bay: Snorkelling with Seals
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – Arrival in Plettenberg Bay
Today, you’re heading to Plettenberg Bay, referred to as ‘Plett’ by the locals. This small, charming town is well-developed for tourists and is perfect for long walks along the wide sandy beaches. You’ll be staying in a well located, cosy guesthouse for the next two nights. The rooms are bright and modern, the hosts are friendly, and from the terrace you might even get the chance to spot dolphins or whales!
Day 2 – Snorkelling with seals in the Robberg Nature Reserve
Today, you’re going to snorkel with seals! After breakfast, you’ll hop on a boat with a small group and head to Robberg Nature Reserve, which is home to about 6,000 fur seals. From the boat, keep your eyes peeled for seals lounging on the rocks along the coast. Put on your wetsuit, grab your mask, and dive into the cool water. As you start swimming, the curious seals will come right up to you to play. Before you know it, you’re snorkelling and swimming among the seals! It’s a truly unforgettable experience.
Hiking in the Robberg Nature Reserve
The rest of your day is free to potter around Plett. You’ll find some great seafood restaurants along the coast, and from July to early December, you can go on whale-watching tours that we can arrange for you. For a bit more adventure, head over to the Robberg Nature Reserve for a hike. This rugged reserve extends from the land into the sea and is known as the Peninsula. We recommend to follow ‘The Gap’ trail, that gradually climbs up rocky paths, before strolling along white sand dunes. Experienced hikers with a bit more time can tackle a longer nine-kilometre hike around the entire peninsula.
Day 3 – Continue along the Garden Route
From Plettenberg Bay, you can continue your journey along the Garden Route. If you’re heading west towards Cape Town, we definitely recommend making a stop in the nearby lagoon town of Knysna. If you’re travelling east towards Port Elizabeth, consider stopping at Tsitsikamma National Park and Addo Elephant National Park.
