Explore the Garden Route to Knysna Lagoon
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – Along the Garden Route to Knysna
On your journey along South Africa’s Garden Route you’ll make a two night stop at the small, atmospheric town of Knysna. Your guesthouse is located on a hill, offering stunning views over the sheltered lagoon on the edge of the town. The waterfront is the lively heart of Knysna. Here you’ll find independent shops, art galleries and plenty of places to eat. Be sure to sample the local speciality – oysters that are freshly harvested from the lagoon.
Day 2 – Hike in the Featherbed Nature Reserve
Today, you’ll hop on a boat that takes you across the Knysna lagoon to the Featherbed Nature Reserve. As you drift further from the shore, you’ll get a beautiful view of the town, spread out along the hills. At the Knysna Heads, where the cliffs separate the lagoon from the Indian Ocean, you’ll walk along the dramatic coastline for about an hour and a half. Along the way, you’ll catch glimpses of the water through the green vegetation, and once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view over the entire lagoon. After your hike, return by boat to Knysna where the rest of your day is free. If you’re feeling active you can rent bikes or kayaks from the waterfront area.
Day 3 – Departure from Knysna
Time to move on and continue your journey along the Garden Route. If you’re heading east towards Port Elizabeth, take some extra time to explore the rugged coastline around Tsitsikamma National Park. If you’re travelling west towards Cape Town, consider stopping at Hermanus for the opportunity to spot whales just off the coast.
