  • ✓ Enjoy the breathtaking coastal scenery all around

Day 1 – Arrival in South Africa’s whale capital

Welcome to the harbour town of Hermanus – South Africa’s whale capital! Between June and December, you can spot whales here as the journey past on their annual migration. A winding path leads you along the coast and brings you to the viewpoint at the old harbour from where you may be lucky to spot a whale. Although the best viewing opportunity is on a boat trip which you will go on tomorrow. You’ll stay for two nights in a small guesthouse, with a swimming pool, that’s within walking distance of the centre.

Day 2 – Whale Watching in Hermanus

Today is the day: you look intently at the sea from the deck of the boat, watching for even the slightest movement. Then it happens. First only a fin rises, then a huge back emerges from the water. Suddenly, a whale leaps into the air, only to sink back into the water seconds later.

Between June and December, conditions for whale watching in the bay are excellent. Although boats are only allowed up to 50 metres from the marine mammals, the reverse is of course not true. And because whales are very curious creatures, you may well have a close encounter with one of these sea giants.

Day 3 – Continue along the Garden Route

Today you will depart Hermanus. If you’re driving east along the Garden Route towards Port Elizabeth you could stop in De Hoop Nature Reserve or the lagoon town of Knysna. If you’re heading west towards Cape Town take time to sample South African wines in the estates around Stellenbosch.
