Getting around South Africa

General information

Getting around South Africa

South Africa is best known for Kruger Park and Cape Town, but this vast country has an diverse array of experiences ready to be explored. From a city break in Johannesburg to wine tasting in Stellenbosch, South Africa is a very diverse country and there is something for everyone during a South Africa tour. Keep reading to find out our advice on the best ways to travel through South Africa.

Self-drive holidays in South Africa

Self-driving is the best way to travel during your South Africa holiday. You’ll have the freedom to travel at your own pace, stop wherever you want and not be dependent on others’ plans and timings. In South Africa, most roads are paved and you drive on the left side of the road, so it’s an easy transition for UK travellers. Most people traveling through South Africa will do so in a rental car and sleep in along the route, something that will offer you great flexibility. The roads on the route from Johannesburg to Cape Town are not always in good condition, so you may prefer to take a domestic flight instead.

Travel by 4×4

If you’re looking for an adventurous way to travel through South Africa and immerse yourself in its rich natural beauty, then we recommend travelling around with a 4-wheel drive equipped with a roof-tent. This way, you can experience and see South Africa at your own pace, with a splash of adventure too! In the evening you’ll gaze on to the starry sky by a campfire before climbing into your cosy tent after an adventurous day and falling asleep to animal sounds in the background. The next morning your tent is folded up again within five minutes and you’ll travel on to the next campsite.

Domestic flights and private transfers

If you have a limited number of days to play with and still want to see a lot of South Africa, you can choose to fly instead of driving. There are daily flights to and from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban.
