South Africa Visa, Passport & Money Advice

South Africa Visa, Passport & Money Advice

When planning your family trip to South Africa, it’s essential to be fully prepared when it comes to getting your visas organised, checking your passports, and understanding money matters. As always, the Rickshaw Team has collated some information to make things easier for you – this way, you can focus on the fun planning side of your holiday rather than spending hours researching what you need for your family holiday to South Africa.

Visa & passports

British passport holders don’t need a visa for trips to South Africa, lasting up to 90 days. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in South Africa. For more information you can find out more here.

Local currency

During your family trip to South Africa, you’ll be using the South African Rand (ZAR) to pay for things. One rand is roughly £0.043. You can exchange your pounds in lots of places, but it’s usually cheaper to just use your debit card. You’ll find ATMs at airports and in most cities, and both Mastercard and Visa are widely accepted.

Tipping

In South Africa, tipping is a common way to show appreciation for good service, whether it’s in restaurants, for drivers, or tour guides. In restaurants, it’s typical to leave around 10% of the bill. For guides, we suggest tipping between 150 – 250 ZAR per day, depending on the service.
