Serra-da-Estrela

Day 1 – Arrival in Serra da Estrela

Mass tourism has not yet found its way to the Serra da Estrela Natural Park – a protected park that is home to the country’s highest mountains. You will drive through small villages, and timeless countryside. Don’t be surprised to share the road with shepherds herding their sheep. Your accommodation is a charming country house, located just 5 minutes from Manteigas, the capital of the region. It has its own small farm shop with fresh produce from the region. If you want to go hiking in the area, we can arrange a guided tour for you.

Day 2 – Wool factory visit

Sheep breeding is an integral part of Serra da Estrela, and has been for generations. The ‘burel’ wool produced in the region is known throughout Portugal and is now sparking interest from overseas. Today we have arranged for you to visit a burel wool factory, where you will learn more about the product, the craftmanship that has been passed from generation to generation, and why it is so important in the Serra da Estrela. The milk of the region’s sheep is also used to make cheese which is considered one of the best in the country. There are several local shops where you can taste it. Highly recommended!

Your afternoon is free. If you’re feeling active, there are many great hiking opportunities in the Serra da Estrela and some incredible views from the region’s lofty landscape. Or you may prefer to potter around the small town of Manteigas, which offers a few cafes and restaurants to choose from.

Day 3 – Depart the mountains

It’s now time to leave the mountains of Serra de Estrela and continue your journey. After this rural adventure you might want to head to the city of Porto for more of a buzz, or travel to the coast and relax in Nazaré. Speak to one of our Travel Specialists for recommendations.
