Terceira: culture and cuisine
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – Arrival on Terceira
The largest town of Terceira is Angra do Heroismo, or Angra as the locals call it. Over the years, Angra has been the most important place in the Azores for culture, religion, economics and politics. It used to be an important stop on the trade route between America and India. Today it is a charming picturesque city, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Day 2 – Walking food tour
We would suggest a light breakfast today as we have arranged a food tour this morning. Terceira’s cuisine is extremely diverse, due mainly to its trade route history and, accompanied by a local guide, you will walk through the city in search of the many culinary influences. Drink coffee like the locals with a sweet ‘Cornucopia’, smell local herbs at the oldest grocer on the island and taste cheese and local wine with a view of Angra Bay. During the 3-hour tour you will also learn everything about the city and Terceira.
Day 3 – Explore Terceira
Time to explore the rest of Terceira. We recommend that you rent a car in Terceira to explore the island more easily. Not to be missed highlights include Furnas do Enxofre, a volcanic hiking paradise where sulphur escapes from the ground in plumes of smoke; Gruta do Natal, a large tunnel formed by lava flows, and the natural pools at Biscoitos, surrounded by black volcanic rock. Just like on the main island of São Miguel, you can also spot whales and dolphins here. Let us know and we will include it in your itinerary.
Day 3 – Farewell to Terceira
From the island of Terceira you can go in all directions within the Azores. The islands of Pico, Faial and the main island of São Miguel can easily be reached by plane. We are happy to discuss with you what best suits your travel wishes.
