Surfing in Peniche
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – Arrival into Peniche
Peniche is originally a small fishing town and has perfect waves. Small bays with small waves for little surfers and challenging waves for older or more experienced surfers. It’s also very easy to add into a Portugal holiday, as it’s only 2.5 hours from Porto and 1.5 hours from Lisbon. You can drive to the beautiful village of Óbidos, or to the beach of Lourinha in half an hour.
You will stay overnight in a bed & breakfast in the centre of Peniche. There’s no swimming pool, but the sea is within walking distance. The rooms are tastefully decorated (there is a sofa bed for the children) and you have your own balcony or terrace to sit outside in the evening.
Day 2 – Surf’s up!
On your second day we recommend a hearty breakfast as you’ll need energy for a surf lesson. The lesson starts on dry land – on the sand. Your experienced surf instructor will teach you how to keep your balance as you jump onto your feet, and how to correctly stand on your surfboard. Once you have grasped the technique it’s time to hit the waves. It may take some time to get it right on the water – be patient! But the first time you really catch a wave is an amazing feeling and you’ll want to go again! After surfing you can relax on one of the beaches nearby.
This afternoon we would recommend exploring the local area. At Grutas de Mira de Aire you will find the largest cave system in Portugal, and you can descend all the way down (about 110 metres), to an underground lake. Or drive to the picturesque medieval town of Óbidos where you can stroll along the narrow alleys and city walls.
Day 3 – Time for a final paddle
You may want to head to the beach again to perfect your surfing technique before departing for your next destination. If you want to swap surf for city, you can be in Lisbon in around 1.5 hours. Or travel inland to Alentejo and stay on a glamping site under the stars
