Time to experience another side of Portugal, away from the coastline and cities. The Peneda-Gerês national park is a picturesque green region of mountains, waterfalls and hidden hamlets. It’s only 1.5 hours from Porto but is off the main tourist trail. We've arranged a paddle-boarding excursion, but this can be swapped to canyoning for the more adventurous.

Day 1 – Arrival into Peneda-Gerês

On the way to Peneda-Gerês, the area becomes greener and hillier. The roads turn into narrow mountain roads, with a herd of cows crossing here and there, and around every bend there is a different view. The air is fresh and you see few other cars. Continue to your hotel, which is a small-scale property located within the national park, with stunning views over the valley.

Day 2 – Paddleboarding

Today we have arranged a paddle boarding experience. It’s a unique and fun way to view the beautiful nature of Peneda Gerês from the water. No previous SUP experience is necessary and it’s great fun for all members of the family. Your experienced guide will first explain the best technique for paddle boarding: where to stand on the board, how to paddle and keep your balance. Then it’s time to head out onto the water. Enjoy your scenic surrounds as you paddle leisurely along. Don’t worry if you lose your balance – the water is clear and it’s nice to cool off!

If paddle boarding is not for you, we can arrange an alternative activity. The more adventurous may want to try canyoning which involves clambering over wet rocks, jumping into waterfalls and sliding down ropes. If this sounds too active we can arrange a leisurely canoeing trip. Or, away from the water, explore the Peneda Gerês national park on a jeep tour. We are happy to help you decide which excursion suits you and your family best.
You will have plenty of time to explore the area yourself. The Cascatas de Fecha de Barjas waterfall is worth visiting and is about a 45-minute drive from your hotel. Along the way you’ll pass small villages comprising of granite houses where villagers still live a very simple, traditional life.

Day 3 – Departure from Peneda-Gerês

If you want to stay longer in the hills, it’s easy to extend this bite-sized trip – just ask your travel specialist for a price. If you’re ready to continue your journey, swap the hills for the ocean and head to Peniche where you can try surfing. Or head to Porto – Portugal’s attractive second city.
