Day 1 – Puerto Maldonado – Tambopata

You’ll usually fly into Puerto Maldonado, the gateway town for the Peruvian Amazon, where you’ll be met by a representative from the lodge. After a brief welcome talk, it’ll be time to drive to a port on the Tambopata River, where you’ll board a small boat for the 45-minute journey to your home for the next few days.

Built entirely from Amazonian materials, your lodge provides employment to local people and provides a comfortable base amongst the rainforest. The en-suite rooms open out into the forest, with private verandas where you can sit and enjoy the sounds of nature. In the afternoon you’ll climb the 30m canopy tower where you’ll have a spectacular view of your surroundings, before returning to enjoy dinner and perhaps a cocktail or two at the lodge’s bar.

Day 2-3 – Exploring the Amazon

Waking up to the sounds of the jungle is an experience in itself, but there’s so much more to do over the next couple of days. The guides will often tailor the program to suit the season and their guests, so you’ll have the opportunity to join boat trips, community visits, birdwatching and jungle walks – both during the day and at night. If you’re very adventurous then longer treks or even mountain biking can be arranged locally too.

The wildlife is a major reason to visit the Amazon of course, and around Tambopata you’ll see monkeys, macaws, parrots, toucans, capybaras, caimans and various spiders and insects. There’s also a chance that you might spot a jaguar by the river, meet the group of giant otters who live nearby, or even fish for piranhas!

Day 4 – Tambopata – Puerto Maldonado

Sadly, it’s time to leave the Amazon today. After breakfast, you’ll travel back to Puerto Maldonado by boat and road, in time for your flight on to your next Peruvian destination.
