Beaches in Namibia

A guide to Namibia's beaches

Spending time at the beach is not the first thought when it comes to a holiday to Namibia but with nearly 1000 miles of dramatic coastline, it offers some truly unique seaside adventures. Less about lazing on the sand, this expansive coastline is full of adventure and dramatic landscapes. From the ancient shipwrecks that dot the coast, to the world-class surf, Namibia’s beaches offer something for the adrenaline seekers and sun-worshippers. As this is one of the only places in the world where the desert meets the ocean, the quickly changing sea temperatures and strong currents don’t make for the best swimming conditions.

Swakopmund

Swakopmund is a vibrant coastal town that combines adventure, relaxation, and a touch of old colonial charm. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the sprawling dunes, this beach town offers a range of outdoor activities to take part in. Swakopmund has earned its reputation as Namibia’s adventure capital, with visitors flocking here to try sandboarding down the dunes, skydiving, surfing the powerful Atlantic swells, or taking to the water by kayak to spot playful fur seals and dolphins. The town was once colonised by Germany and the colonial architecture can be seen throughout the town. For a more relaxed activity, the oceanfront promenade is a great spot for a stroll.

Skeleton Coast

The Skeleton Coast is one of Namibia’s most dramatic and eerie natural landscapes, stretching along the desolate northern coastline. As the name suggested, the area is a stark reminder of the shipwrecks, coastal fog, and treacherous seas that earned it a reputation among sailors. You can spot the remains of over a thousand shipwrecks scattered along its sands, many dating back centuries, along with whale bones and remnants of old whaling and sealing activities that dot the shoreline. The shifting dunes and relentless surf create an ever-changing landscape.

Walvis Bay offers a rich blend of natural wonders and vibrant local culture. Situated along a nutrient-rich lagoon fed by the Benguela Current, this coastal town is a haven for marine life. Flamingos and pelicans grace the waters, while seals, dolphins, and even whales can often be spotted just offshore. Sample Walvis Bay’s famous oysters, cultivated in the pristine waters of the lagoon, stroll along the esplanade, and stay in the lighthouse on the nearby headland, offering spectacular sunset views and a sense of serene isolation. The combination of wildlife, fresh seafood, and unique accommodation makes Walvis Bay a must-visit on Namibia’s coast.
