Tafraoute: In the hidden palm valley
Bite-sized tripDay 1: Journey to Tafraoute in the mountains
From Agadir or Taroudant you drive south through vast plains towards the Anti-Atlas Mountains. The road then winds uphill and you drive over mountain paths towards the Ameln Valley and the small town of Tafraoute in the Atlas foothills. The scenery of towering cliffs, rock formations and verdant palm oases is what makes this place so special. You will be staying at comfortable boutique hotel set in the mountains, 4 km from Tafraoute. The property has been designed to blend in with the surrounding landscape and features an outdoor pool that overlooks the mountains. It’s also possible to stay in a small, simple guesthouse owned by a local family. Ask your Travel Specialist for more information if this sounds of interest.
Day 2 – Berber village hike
Today you’ll go on a guided walk to some of the Berber villages nestled at the foot of the mountains. You’ll be joined by a local guide who will tell you all about the area, giving you a taste of the traditional rural life of the people of the Anti Atlas. The great thing about this guided walk is that it doesn’t feel touristy at all, but a real, authentic glimpse into the local way of life. The walk lasts around three hours and includes a basic picnic lunch. You can spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the area on your own. The area is famous for it’s bizarre landscape of rock formations. They’re easy to get to by car, but you can also hire a bike locally.
Day 3 – Depart the mountains
After breakfast and a cup of mint tea on the roof terrace, it’s time to leave Tafraoute and follow the winding roads back down the mountains to the next destination on your Moroccan adventure. If you want to stay longer to explore this unique landscape further, just let your Morocco specialist know and we can extend this bite-sized trip.
