Bite-sized trip
Day 1 – Arrive in Essaouira
The coastal town of Essaouira is easily reached by bus or car from Marrakech in around three hours. This bustling fishing port is famous for its impressive historic ramparts and wide sweeping beach. A reliable (and sometimes strong) coastal breeze attracts windsurfers and means it’s not a beach for sunbathing. But it’s perfect for a long walk along the promenade.
You will be staying in an atmospheric Moroccan riad located within the walls of the medina. Once you’ve freshened up you’ll have the rest of the day to explore. There’s a bohemian vibe to Essaouira’s old town and you can while away hours pottering around the traditional souk and art galleries. And you’re spoilt for choice for places to eat.
Day 2 – Meet Essaouira’s fishermen
Essaouira has a bustling fishing harbour and it’s great to stroll along the fishing boats, but today’s excursion will give you a real insight into the life of the local fishermen. Your local guide will take you along the city walls, the fortress and through the fishing port, sharing stories of local life and the importance of the sea to Essaouira. You do some shopping for lunch at the vegetable market and then on to the Friture de Poisson: the grilling of the fish by local fishermen in a courtyard. You won’t easily find this place yourself. You’ll have the opportunity to grill your own fish for lunch. It doesn’t get fresher than this!
Day 3 – Depart Essaouira
Take one final walk along the beach before checking out of your riad. It’s time to continue with your Moroccan journey. If this is the end of your trip we can arrange a transfer to the airport in time for your homebound flight.
