Self-drive in Morocco
A self-drive holiday in Morocco may not be the first thing that springs to mind! However, renting a car is an excellent way of exploring Morocco, giving you complete freedom and the chance to travel at your own pace. The roads (particularly the highways) are good and the signage is clear. We will provide you with full information and detailed directions, and both the car rental company and our local partners are on hand 24/7 should you need assistance.
Roads, signs & petrol
The highways in Morocco are certainly good by North African standards, as the king has invested a huge amount of money in recent years to improve the infrastructure. The maximum speed on the highway is 120 km/h, 100 km/h outside the towns and 60 km/h in urban areas. Traffic signs are prevalent and clearly recognisable, despite the majority being in Arabic or French. Important signs are translated in English.
Petrol stations are plentiful in Morocco, and you’ll spot recognisable brands such as Shell, BP and Texaco. Petrol stations are serviced – the staff will always fill up for you. Indicate which fuel you want, generally sans plomb (lead-free), agree on an amount or indicate that you want a full tank. It is customary to give a small tip to those who helped you.
Driving etiquette
Driving in Morocco is on the right-hand side of the road. As in the UK, it’s mandatory to wear a seat belt and prohibited to use a mobile phone whilst driving.
In the cities, and especially in Marrakech, traffic can be hectic and you’ll often be sharing the roads with cyclists, pedestrians and animals! Once you’re out of the cities, the roads are calmer, drivers are less erratic and driving is much more pleasurable. Main roads sometime pass through villages offering you an insight into local life as you drive.
