Self drive in Morocco

General information

A family self-drive holiday in Morocco may not be the first thing that springs to mind, however, renting a car is an excellent way to explore Morocco as it gives you complete freedom and the chance to travel at your own pace.

The roads, particularly the motorways, are in good condition and the signage is clear. We will provide you with all the information you’ll need, along with detailed directions, and both the car rental company and our local partners are on hand 24/7 should you need assistance.

Roads, Signs and Petrol

The motoways in Morocco are good by North African standards, as the country has invested a huge amount of money in recent years to improve the infrastructure. The maximum speed is 120 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h outside the towns and 60 km/h in urban areas. Traffic signs are prevalent and clearly recognisable, despite the majority being in Arabic or French. Important signs are translated into English too.

Petrol stations are plentiful in Morocco, and you’ll spot recognisable brands such as Shell, BP and Texaco. Petrol stations are serviced – the staff will always fill up for you. Indicate which fuel you want, generally sans plomb (lead-free), agree on an amount or indicate that you want a full tank. It is customary to give a small tip to those who help you.

Driving etiquette

Driving in Morocco is on the right-hand side of the road and as in the UK, it’s mandatory to wear a seat belt and use of a mobile phone whilst driving is prohibited. We can include child and baby seats with your reservation.

In the cities, especially Marrakech, traffic can be hectic and you’ll often be sharing the roads with cyclists, pedestrians and animals! Once you’re out of the cities, the roads are much calmer, drivers are less erratic and it is much more pleasurable. Main roads sometime pass through villages offering you an insight into local life as you travel.
