Colourful Markets & Indian Villages – San Cristobal

Bite-sized trip
  • Itinerary:
    San Cristobal
  • Duration:
    3 days / 2 nights (flexible)
  • Price:
from £158 per person (excluding flights)
San Cristóbal is the capital of Mexican Indian culture – an attractive old city nestled in a lush highland valley, with pine forests all around. You'll stay in a colourful posada located in the winding cobbled streets of the old town, from where you can amble around at your leisure. You’ll also head to the mountain village of San Juan Chamula, to get a taste of indigenous Tzotzil culture.

Day 1 – Arrival in San Cristobal

After travelling into the mountains of Sierra Madre de Chiapas, you’ll arrive in the valley and San Cristóbal de las Casas. You’ll be staying in a colourful posada with beautifully decorated rooms located in the old centre. The centre of San Cristóbal is car-free, so you can wander around the winding cobbled streets at a snail’s pace and take your time choosing which restaurant or bar to hang out in next.

Day 2 – San Juan Chamula tour

After breakfast today you’ll meet with a local guide for a trip to San Juan Chamula, heartland of indigenous Tzotzil culture. The Chamulans have proudly kept their traditions and way of life alive, and as you explore the village you’ll learn all about their culture and religion, as well as seeing their craftwork and cookery techniques. You’ll be back in San Cristóbal in the afternoon, in time for a relaxing evening strolling through the old town.

Day 3 – Continue your journey

We can easily add more nights in San Cristóbal if you’d like a little longer here, otherwise it’ll be time to head back to the bus station today in time to start the next leg of your journey through Mexico.
