Day 1 – Arrival to Garifuna village of Hopkins

Welcome to Hopkins, a beachside town to the north of Placencia that will instantly win you over with its laid-back vibe. Packed with small family-run shops, restaurants and bars, the community feel is strong here, and you’ll feel a part of it from the very start. During your stay in Hopkins, you’ll reside in one of the small-scale hotels in the northern part of the town. With the beach at your doorstep, a pool (if you’re after a freshwater dip), and a garden all around, here you’ll be living your tropical dream. Plus, you’ll never run out of things to do: Hopkins is blessed with the ideal location with the jungle to the west and the southern barrier reef to the east.

Day 2 – Garifuna drumming workshop

Wake up to the rays of the Caribbean sun and enjoy your lazy day. No one’s in a hurry, and we suggest you follow the lead: the first part of the day is free for you to just chill. After making the tough choices of what juice to have with your breakfast, and whether to have a swim in the sea or the pool (or both), lazily stroll into town for a wander and the freshly grilled catch of the day. If you’re feeling active, grab a kayak and your snorkelling gear and explore the beaches and the underwater world.

In the afternoon you’ll unleash (or find!) your inner drummer and join the Garifuna drumming workshop at one of the local schools. The Garinagu people (also referred to as Garifuna) are the Afro-Caribbean descendants who, after centuries of struggles, have found home on the peaceful shores of Belize and brought their unique heritage to this land. Drumming and singing are at the centre of the Garifuna culture and today you’ll delve right into it. With the help of skilful local musicians you’ll practice some basic beats and give in to the fiery Garifuna rhythms.

Day 3 – Departure from Hopkins

Hopkins is hard to say goodbye to, so don’t be shy if you think you’d like a few more days here (just let your Travel Specialist know!). On your last day here we’ll arrange your transfer to your next destination, or to the airport if your trip is coming to an end.
