Yucatan Explorer: Ruins, Cenotes & Beaches
ItineraryDay 1 – Arrival in Cancun
You will be met at the airport and transferred to the centre of Cancun (about one hour’s drive away). You can hear mariachi and salsa music from the restaurants, so we’ve chosen a hotel for you in a quieter area where you can take it easy, acclimatise, and take a dip in the hotel pool. When you’re ready to head out, there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. Why don’t you try some traditional tacos or burritos?
Day 2 – Cancun to Valladolid
Your Yucatan adventure starts today, with your rental car pickup at 9:00 a.m. Upon receiving essential information about your vehicle and the route ahead, set off on your personalized journey through this captivating region. Within approximately two hours, you’ll find yourself in the enchanting town of Valladolid.
Known as the gateway to the authentic Mexico, Valladolid offers a nostalgic ambiance, steeped in the charm of its Spanish colonial architecture. Take a leisurely stroll through its streets to immerse yourself in the daily life of the locals. From women donning traditional Mexican attire as they visit the shoemaker to men enjoying a traditional shave at the barbershop, and children playing in the vibrant public squares – every corner tells a story.
Your accommodation for the night awaits in a quaint colonial hotel situated at the heart of the central square. Here, you’ll find inviting benches encouraging moments of reflection. Enjoy a delicious meal within the hotel’s courtyard, surrounded by the echoes of history. Nearby, the Franciscan Cathedral stands tall amidst typical residential areas adorned with colourful houses, offering a glimpse into the town’s rich heritage.
Days 3-4 – Cenotes and exploration in Valladolid
Venture further to discover a hidden gem within the city – a cenote nestled amidst the limestone terrain. These natural wonders, known as cenotes, hold crystal-clear freshwater within their depths, a testament to the ancient Maya civilization. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Dzitnup, one of the most exquisite cenotes located just a short drive from Valladolid, offering a surreal experience within its bright cave setting.
As evening falls, wander through the enchanting streets of the San Bernardino district, illuminated by romantic lighting. Follow the path leading to the San Bernardino Monastery, and pause for a refreshing drink at one of the charming bars lining Calle 41, soaking in the atmosphere of this historic setting.
Day 5 – Mexican cooking in Izamal
The historic city of Izamal is known for its colonial charm and picturesque architecture. It’s also a great place to sample Yucatecan food which is different to traditional Mexican cuisine.
During your stay in Izamal we will arrange a cooking class where you will learn more about the regional cuisine under the guidance of a local chef. The chef’s English is limited but you’ll still gain knowledge on how to prepare some delicious dishes which you will get the opportunity to tuck into at the end of the class.
Days 6-7 – Izamal – Merida
You’ll arrive in Merida, a charming colonial gem, with its host of great eateries, bars, markets and live music. Your hotel is near to the centre, so you can easily explore on foot and take in the highlights of the city.
Days 8-10 – Tulum: Mayan Ruins on Palm Beach
Soft sandy beaches, turquoise waters and coastline dotted with Mayan ruins await in Tulum. This is the perfect place to spend a few days relaxing before heading to the airport to fly home. You’ll stay in a boutique hotel with a pool in the town of Tulum Pueblo, close to a variety of restaurants, shops and bars. The white sand beach is a short taxi ride away, or about 20mins by bike which you can rent locally. Explore the Tulum ruins perched on top of the cliffs or go further north to discover one of the oldest Maya cities, Cobá, hidden deep in the jungle. There’s also a cenote nearby where you can swim, so plenty to keep you occupied during your stay.
Days 11-13 – Snorkelling and relaxing in Cozumel
The island of Cozumel is located just off the coast of Playa del Carmen and you can reach this paradise in less than 45 minutes by ferry. The ferry departs every 30 minutes and you can easily buy the ticket yourself. This island has a green interior with some small Mayan ruins and white sand beaches, especially in the south. You’ll be staying in a boutique, Mexican style hotel that features an outdoor saltwater swimming pool.
The main reason to go to the island is the colourful coral and during your stay we will arrange a snorkelling excursion. From the port, board a speedboat and sail across the crystal clear waters. The boat drops you above the reef to maximise your snorkelling experience. Gaze at tropical fish, colourful coral and with a bit of luck sea turtles will swim with you. You’ll notice the seabed is covered with starfish. After snorkelling there will be the opportunity to relax on a sandbank where you stand up to your waist in water and rays swim curiously around you.
You have an extra day to relax by the pool at your hotel. Tip! Rent a car or book an excursion to Punta Sur on site, where you will find the most beautiful beaches in Cozumel: white powder beach and countless palm trees. After swimming and relaxing, climb into the lighthouse for a spectacular view. Do you want something more exciting? Then join the guide to spot crocodiles in the lagoon.
