For those that enjoy cycling, this adventure along the Shimanami Kaido is a perfect addition between Kyoto and Hiroshima. The Shimanami Kaido is a scenic toll road that connects the main island of Japan (Honshu) with the island of Shikoku. Along the route, you’ll pass six smaller islands, each offering its own charm and stunning views. The ride covers approximately 70 kilometres, making it suitable for both seasoned cyclists and leisure riders.

Day 1 – Arrival in Onomichi

Today you will travel to Onomichi, a picturesque harbor town full of charm and character. You’ll stay in a centrally located hotel, giving you time to rest well before starting your cycling adventure early the next morning. It’s worth planning to arrive in Onomichi early afternoon to make the most of your time here. The tourist information center at the JR station has lots of useful information material about Onomichi itself and about the Shimanami Kaido cycling route. Take the evening to relax and enjoy the town’s culinary delights.

Day 2 – Shimanami Kaido bike tour

The Shimanami Kaido is a stunning 70-kilometer cycling route connecting Honshu and Shikoku, passing over several impressive bridges and six small islands in between. As you cycle, you’ll pass through charming villages, lush fields, and along the beautiful coastline, with panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea.

You’ll pick up your bike in the morning and the bike shop staff will assist you with adjusting your saddle, provide a quick briefing on the cycling rules in Japan, and give you an emergency contact number for peace of mind during your ride. When you’re ready, you’ll hop on a ferry to the first island and from there, simply follow the blue cycling path marked along the route. The route is well-maintained, with separate bike lanes on the bridges, making it safe and enjoyable for all riders. You’ll cycle pass through small villages and beautiful landscapes, before reaching Imabari. Once there, you’ll return your bike and check in at your hotel, where a refreshing shower will be waiting for you. Your luggage will have been transported to your Imabari hotel earlier in the day.

Tip: If you prefer a more relaxed pace and want to explore the islands in greater depth, opt for an e-bike instead or arrange an extra night on one of the islands along the route. This gives you the flexibility to take in the sights at a more leisurely pace. Just let your travel specialist know your preference and we’ll be happy to help.

Day 3 – Departure from Imabari

After your adventure yesterday, take the morning to relax and unwind before continuing your journey. If this is the final stop of your journey, you can return home via Osaka, which is well-connected with the rest of Japan and from there, you can catch your international flight back home.
