Arriving in Takayama, you’ll settle into your quaint hotel to check in. You can spend the afternoon walking back through the ages, admiring the 17th century architecture and wealth of museums, galleries and temples. Take a stroll along the river before dipping into a local restaurant to try some of this region’s famous Hida beef.

You’ll start with a visit to the Takayama Festival Float Museum, where you’ll find all the magnificent floats from the famous festival are preserved. Your guide will explain the traditions and symbolism related to this festival, which is one of the most important in Japan. Your second stop is the Higashiyama Temple Area, a peaceful group of temples on a slightly elevated hill area in the eastern part of the town. Not only are all of these historical temples, but they are also an array of cultural assets. As you wander around, you’ll get to enjoy both the historical sites and beautiful nature that surrounds them.
