Relax in a Japanese Onsen
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – Arrive and unwind
On the island of Kyushu, you’ll arrive in the small town of Yunohira. Yunohira, which is located in a narrow valley. A stream runs right through the town centre and the forested mountains around it makes it feel very remote. You can reach Yunohira by car or by train. The nearest train station is just a few kilometres further up the valley and from there you can take a taxi. In keeping with the character of Yunohira, you will spend the night in a traditional ryokan.
For a true ryokan experience, your hosts will prepare a beautifully crafted dinner, showcasing the best of Japanese cuisine. You’ll likely discover an array of small dishes with fresh fish, vegetables, tofu and always served with a miso soup and rice alongside. Each meal is a work of art in itself and a real highlight of the experience. After dinner, take a leisurely stroll through the streets that are all lit by charming red lanterns. If you want, you can put on a yukata, a traditional robe, and clogs, which are often provided by the roykan and just complete the authentic Japanese experience.
Day 2 – Continue your journey
Enjoy a hearty breakfast, prepared with as much love and care as your dinner was yesterday. Take the time to savour the morning either at your ryokan or in the peaceful village. After a leisurely start, it’s time to say goodbye and continue your journey feeling completely refreshed and relaxed.
Good to know!
A classic onsen is actually a natural hot spring, usually containing minerals, and bathing in them is considered a blessing. Your accommodation will have its own onsen to relax in. These baths can vary in size and style, with some being small and intimate, while others are more spacious, and the temperatures can range from pleasantly warm to very hot. Some may be made of wood, others of stone, and while private baths are available, it’s important to follow the rules of conduct, which will usually be explained by your hosts..
Like many Japanese onsen locations, Yunohira also has a number of public onsens, separated by gender, and have an entrance fee of around 200 yen. Do as the locals do and hop from one onsen to the next, indulging in the relaxing and therapeutic experience.
