Day 1 -Welcome to Takamatsu

Today you will reach the versatile city of Takamatsu. Around the station and harbour, the city buzzes with modern energy, while at its heart, it preserves its timeless charm and historic character. Stroll through the arcades and enjoy a bowl of sanuki-udon, a dish that has made Takamatsu famous, served in one of its charming traditional restaurants. You’ll stay in a comfortable, mid-range hotel conveniently located in the heart of the city.

If you arrive early enough, take a trip to to Yashima-ji, Temple No. 84 on Shikoku’s renowned 88-temple pilgrimage route. Perched atop Mount Yashima, just east of Takamatsu, this serene temple offers also stunning views of the surrounding landscape. With a rental car, the drive takes about 30 minutes, though the temple is also easily accessible by train, bus, or taxi.

Day 2 – Island Hopping in the Seto Inland Sea

The Seto Inland Sea stretches between the major islands of Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku, with over 3,000 islands, ranging from tiny, uninhabited gems to larger islands renowned for their artistic and cultural treasures. Takamatsu is an ideal base for a trip to to explore a couple of these captivating islands. You can easily buy a ferry ticket directly at the harbour. For an iconic experience, head to Naoshima, famed worldwide for its modern art installations and architecture. If you’re seeking something more off the beaten path, check out Teshima, where art blends in with authentic island life. For a laid-back vibe, especially in the warm summer months, a visit to Megijima offers a relaxing escape. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or just looking to soak up the serene beauty of the sea, the islands of the Seto Inland Sea have something for everyone.

Days 3 – Walk through Ritsurin-koen

If you haven’t visited Ritsurin-koen already, you should definitely do so before you leave. The park is rightly considered to be one of the most beautiful in the country and no matter what time of year you visit, it is always a sight to behold. Colourful flowerbeds, traditional tea houses and small paths invite you to take a leisurely stroll. When your ready, you can continue your journey through Japan.
