Day 1 – Arrive in Kagoshima

Today you’ll journey deep into the heart of southern Kyushu, heading to the vibrant city of Kagoshima. The city is nestled on a large bay with the active Sakurajima volcano looming in the background. Its a warm city with a very friendly atmosphere. The garden Sengan-en and the many onsens invite you to unwind and relax. You’ll be staying in a comfortable hotel ideally located in the city centre, close to a tram station for easy access to the city’s attractions. If you feel like exploring the city further, drive to Ibusuki, around 50 km away. Here you can take a real sand bath in hot volcanic sand, which is said to have medicinal properties. Alternatively, take a short drive to Chiran, just 30 km away, known for its beautifully preserved samurai houses.

Day 2 – The volcanic island of Sakurajima

The Sakurajima volcano, which was once an island, is now connected to the mainland thanks to a major eruption in 1914. As an active volcano, it frequently emits ash clouds, creating a striking and photogenic backdrop to the city of Kagoshima. Today, you can dedicate your time to exploring the volcanic island of Sakurajima. Start by taking a car or passenger ferry from Kagoshima to the island. Once you get there, hop on one of the island’s buses, which will take you around to various viewpoints and stations for you to enjoy the stunning scenery and volcanic landscape. While the three peaks of Sakurajima are not accessible, the island offers plenty of opportunities to take in the dramatic views and unique volcanic terrain.

Days 3 – Say goodbye to Kagoshima

Today your time in Kagoshima has come to an end and it’s time to say goodbye to this charming city for you to continue your journey to the next exciting destination.
