At home among the rice fields
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – Staying with a Japanese family
When you arrive in Gotemba, you’ll be welcomed by your host family who will greet you with a warm and friendly smile. Each homestay in Gotemba is different, tailored to the lifestyle and traditions of the hosts. For example, you may stay with a family who runs a small farm, where your time will be filled with hands-on activities. You might join them in their garden to pick fresh ingredients for dinner and a collaborative cooking session – the perfect opportunity to learn more about Japanese culinary traditions. Tonight, you’ll sleep on futons placed on tatami mats in a cosy room of your own. Although futons may seem unfamiliar at first, their simplicity are often surprisingly comfortable.
Day 2 – Say goodbye to your host family
Over the next few days, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the wonders of Ishigaki. It has so much to offer, so it’s worth planning ahead to make the most of your time. Whether you prefer to unwind on the stunning beaches or embark on an adventure into Ishigaki’s lush landscapes, there’s something for everyone. Don’t miss trying the local specialties like “Pindatofu,” a creamy peanut-flavoured tofu, or the flavourful “Yaeyama Soba,” a noodle dish unique to the region.
Kabira Bay, one of Ishigaki’s most famous attractions, is also a must-see. With its dazzling turquoise waters and white sand, it’s no surprise swimming here is prohibited to preserve its pristine beauty. Instead, hop aboard a glass-bottom boat to marvel at the vibrant coral reefs and marine life. If you’d rather dive into the water, just a short five-minute drive from Kabira Bay is another gorgeous sandy beach where swimming is allowed.
