Kalimantan River Safari

Bite-sized trip
  • Itinerary:
Pangkalan Bun - Tanjung Puting NP - Camp Leakey
  • Duration:
    4 days / 3 nights
  • Price:
from £ 919.- per person (excluding flights)
On this four-day jungle cruise you'll explore the heart of Kalimantan’s rainforest aboard a traditional klotok boat. Discover the wilderness of Indonesian Borneo as you take guided jungle walks, learning about the endangered orangutans and their delicate habitat. Along the way, observe local life along the riverbanks and spot wildlife like proboscis monkeys and vibrant bird species. At night fall asleep to the soothing sounds of the jungle.

Day 1 – Arrival Pangkalan Bun

After a short flight, you’ll land in Pangkalan Bun, where you’ll be met and transferred to the river. Here you’ll board a traditional klotok which will be your home for the next 3 nights. Begin your journey cruising along the Sekonyer River to observe wildlife like orangutans, proboscis monkeys, and crocodiles. At the rehabilitation centre, you’ll encounter orangutans up close and contribute to conservation by planting a tree. The adventure then continues with a thrilling night jungle expedition in search of nocturnal creatures. End your day with dinner on board before getting some rest, lulled by the sounds of the jungle.

Day 2 – Tanjung Puting National Park

After enjoying a freshly prepared breakfast, you’ll head off to visit Tanjung Harapan village, nestled within the national park, to experience life along the river. Keep an eye on the riverbanks to spot an array of wildlife, including birds, macaques, proboscis monkeys, and orangutans, as well as crocodiles and monitor lizards basking in the sun.

Your journey then continues to Camp Leakey, an iconic orangutan research and rehabilitation centre. Over 200 orangutans have been reintroduced into the jungle through its efforts, and today it serves as a hub for studying their behaviour and diet. Accompanied by your guide, you’ll venture into the jungle to observe them in their natural habitat and discover other wildlife. During your time there, you’ll watch the orangutan feeding session at the observation platform. Due to the shrinking jungle habitat, food can sometimes be scarce, and these majestic apes emerge from the forest for treats like juicy mangoes or bananas – a unique and unforgettable encounter with this endangered species.

Day 3 – Orangutans of Kalimantan

After breakfast, you’ll head to Camp Tanggui for the morning orangutan feeding. As you approach the feeding platform, you’ll begin to see the orangutans’ silhouettes moving through the treetops, gracefully making their way to the platform. Tanggui was once a release camp for rehabilitated young orangutans, and the feeding sessions continue to support their integration into the wild while preventing them from wandering into dangerous areas such as farmer traps or palm oil plantations. After lunch, you’ll then have the chance to arrange another visit Camp Leakey for a second feeding session.

Day 4 – Departure from Kalimantan

After a final breakfast onboard head to the port for your transfer to the airport. From here, you’ll continue your Indonesia adventure. Alternatively, you can easily arrange to fly home via Jakarta.
