Rumbling Bromo
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – Prambanan, Solo & Candi Sukuh
Your first stop is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Prambanan, a Hindu temple compound high on atmosphere, where you can take a walk around the eight intricate temples. Built in the 10th century, this is the largest temple compound dedicated to Shiva in Indonesia. Afterwards, you’ll travel to Solo. The driver will drop you off at the ‘Kraton’ in the centre of town where you can roam through the various rooms of this royal palace. You’ll see traditional musical instruments and a large collection of gifts received by the royal family.
Right across from the Kraton, you’ll find a small antique market spilling over with trinkets. Next, you’ll make the 4 hour journey to Sukuh, a town nestled high between mountain peaks, known mostly for its erotic temple. We guarantee that the carvings here will raise an eyebrow or two. It’s a peaceful place that will give you a taste of local life beyond the usual tourist track. You’ll spend the night in simple, rustic accommodation – the only option in the village!
Day 2 – Tawangmangu & Malang
Today, you’ll take a hike through an untouched part of Java. The route starts by Sukuh temple and continues across a gorgeous hilly landscape. As you walk along you’ll pass by plantations where carrots, red bell peppers and green beans are grown. Your driver will wait for you at the end point and you’ll continue travelling east. You’ll spend the night in the large highland city of Malang.
Day 3 – Jeep safari to Bromo volcano for sunset
This morning, you’ll have time to take a wander around Malang’s colonial villas, shady boulevards and colourful flower market. Next, you’ll drive to the southern part of the mountain range (Tumpang) after a few hours you will transfer to a jeep to continue your adventure. there will be a stop to walk to a waterfall and cross a vast plain with volcanic lava sand and via an impressive moonscape with several volcanic peaks around you you will arrive at the foot of the Bromo volcano. You climb to the crater rim and look deep into the crater. You will immediately understand why the Bromo volcano is a highlight for many Indonesia travellers.
At the end of the afternoon you drive to a viewpoint to view the volcanoes from a distance. It can be busy on the plateau, but much quieter than at sunrise. Enjoy a meal with a breath-taking view over the valley and the increasingly orange-red volcanoes in the middle.
When the sun has disappeared behind the horizon, you drive to the north-eastern side of the mountain range where your jeep climbs up a thin and steep asphalt road. Here you will find your simple overnight accommodation. It is pitch dark here at night, so make sure you have your flashlight with you. Rinse off the dust from the volcano and crawl under the covers.
Day 4 – Depart Java
Today you’ll enjoy a warming breakfast at your hotel, before you pack up your things and continue with your driver to your next destination.
