Semarang is a captivating blend of history and culture. Perched on the coast, it seamlessly combines modern Asian flair with colonial charm. Learn more about the city as you wander through the streets with a local guide and marvel at the beautifully preserved colonial architecture.

Day 1 – Arrival Semarang

The city of Semarang boasts a rich history and vibrant culture. It’s conveniently accessible from Jakarta, Bandung, or Surabaya by train, and can easily be combined with visits to Yogyakarta, Borobudur, or the Dieng Plateau. Despite its charm, the city remains off the radar for most tourists. Spend the night in a centrally located hotel, just a short taxi ride from the train station. Situated by the sea, the city’s high humidity takes some adjusting, so take it slow and enjoy a relaxed stroll through its mostly car-free centre. Tomorrow, you’ll experience the city’s highlights with a knowledgeable local guide.

Day 2 – Historic centre walking tour

After breakfast this morning, your English-speaking local guide will take you on a fascinating walking tour through Semarang. In the heart of the historic Kota Lama, or ‘Old Town,’ you’ll explore the remnants of the old VOC fortress. Admire the iconic Gereja Blenduk, a well-preserved Protestant church, before strolling through charming streets lined with colonial gems. Pass by ‘Rumah Akar,’ the former financial district, and other notable landmarks including the colonial style Tekodeko Coffee House. A highlight of the tour is Lawang Sewu, the grand former headquarters of the Dutch East Indies Railway Company, with its beautiful stained glass windows and elegant colonnades. As you walk, your guide will share interesting stories about the history and culture that will bring the city to life.

Day 3 – Time to continue your Java journey

It’s time to continue your journey through Java. You may wish to swap the city for a beach and head to the tropical paradise of Karimunjawa. Alternatively, if your Indonesia adventure is drawing to a close, you can hop on a train to Jakarta for your flight back home.
