Trek Into Untamed Indonesia

Scale smoking volcanoes, trek through tropical rainforest and hike between the rice paddies. Wander across lunar-like volcanic plains to milky crater lakes, walk to tiny rural villages and stroll barefoot along abandoned beaches. Indonesia is a trekker’s delight, so whip out the walking boots, the trekking is all there for the taking.

Trek through remote rainforest

Sumatra is raw, remote and brilliant for a tropical ramble. Hike into the jungle to see orangutans swinging through the trees, learn how to scrub down an elephant in the isolated rainforest and wake up to an exotic dawn chorus. Take dips in hidden waterfalls, soak in volcanic hot springs and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife along the way.

Trek to traditional villages

Indonesia is home to a handful of ancient hill tribes and traditional communities, all following timeless customs and rituals. Meet the Minangkabau people of Western Sumatra, living in unique clan houses, stay with the locals in beautiful rural Bali and trek to small villages nestled in the volcanic foothills on Java’s vast Ijen Plateau. The scenery in Java is wonderful and the people even more so.

Amble between the rice paradise

Indonesia’s rice paddies seem to go on forever, flowing down the hillsides and stretching as far as the eye can see. Rural Bali is a beautiful place for scenic hikes in breezy hills, where you can stay at home with the locals in tucked-away villages. Lombok’s interior is a patchwork of coffee, spice and vanilla plantations that make for a very aromatic amble. Java’s foothills are flower-filled, fertile and peppered with fresh waterfalls. Every island is winning walking territory.

Climb to volcanic craters

Indonesia is swamped with smoking volcanoes just begging to be scaled and surreal milky crater lakes scattered across lunar-like plains. If you’re up for a challenge, you’re in for a treat. Hike through the darkness with your head torch to catch sunrise over Lombok’s highest volcano, camp under the stars on the summit of Mount Rinjani and watch the day break over mist-swirled Mount Bromo. Every island has a handful of calderas to climb, so you’ll never be far from a volcanic hike to really remember.
