Escape to the Andaman Islands
Bite-sized tripThe best time of the year to visit the Andaman Islands is between December and April. July to September are the wettest months, and many hotels are closed during this time.
Day 1 – Arrival in Port Blair
Today you’ll arrive by domestic flight into Port Blair – the entry point to India’s tropical Andaman Islands. Chances are you will have flown in from Chennai, but domestic flights also operate from Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai.
This archipelago in the Bay of Bengal boasts the most pristine beaches in India and some of Asia’s best diving opportunities but is surprisingly off the main tourist radar. Port Blair is the bustling capital city of the islands and you’ll spend a night here. You’ll be met at the airport and transferred to your city hotel. In the afternoon head out with a guide to visit the British-built Cellular Jail, where political prisoners were once held. When it comes to dinner, there are plenty of good restaurants in Port Blair and your guide will be able to make recommendations.
Day 2 – Ferry to Havelock Island
This morning you’ll be driven to the port, where you will board the ferry to Havelock Island – a journey of 1.5 to 2 hours. On arrival make your way to the end of the jetty where you’ll be met and transferred to your oceanfront hotel. Havelock Island is one of the most accessible of the Andaman Islands, and therefore one of the most popular. But it retains its low-key, island charm and is blissfully peaceful compared to the hustle and bustle of mainland India. Due to its remote location, internet and phone coverage is pretty limited on the island. It’s the perfect place for a digital detox! Time to relax and embrace the laid-back island vibe.
Days 3-4 – Kick back and relax
Spend your days swimming, snorkelling, enjoying leisurely lunches and dozing. Diving is on offer for those who wish and if you’re feeling active you can trek into the forested interior. During your time on Havelock we definitely recommend taking a stroll along the picture-postcard Radhanagar Beach. It’s a beautiful (and popular) spot at sunset but much quieter in the early morning.
We haven’t included any excursions during your stay on Havelock Island but we can arrange snorkelling, diving and visits to other nearby islands. Speak to a Travel Specialist to discuss the options.
Day 5 – Back to the mainland
Today you’ll be transferred back to the jetty in time for the return ferry to Port Blair. Then, at Port Blair you’ll be driven to the airport for your onward flight. Depending on ferry and flight times, an overnight in Port Blair may be required, but we’ll ensure your onward plans are seamless.
If you have more time and want to stay longer – and we can’t blame you – just mention this in your request. Another alternative would be to add on a night in nearby Neil Island, which is easily accessible from Havelock and Port Blair. Your Travel Specialist can talk you through the options.
