The Westman Islands are located off the coast of southern Iceland and are a paradise for hikers and those looking for wild puffins. Also known as Pompeii, due to the most recent volcanic eruption in 1973, which buried villages under a thick layer of ash and lava. The Iceland you see on the Westman Islands is therefore relatively young and too beautiful for just a day trip. On this trip we’ll arrange your ferry transfers and an overnight stay on the largest island of the Westman Islands.

Day 1 – Travel to the Westman Islands

Today you’ll drive to Landeyjahöfn, the ferry port in the south of Iceland. In the distance, the mysterious volcanic islands in the sea are already waiting for you. To enter Heimaey harbour, the ferry passes through a narrow opening, surrounded by friable rocks and a field of solidified lava. It’s easy to see that these islands were formed after volcanic eruptions. Once you get to the islands, you’ll check in to your hotel that is centrally located for you to fully explore the island.

The rest of the day is free for you to do as you please. The most recent volcanic eruption was in 1973, when the Eldfell volcano suddenly started rumbling and spewed ash over the island and town for five months. There are still signs here and there to remind you what lies under the lava here. If you’re feeling adventurous, the volcano is now easy to climb and once you get to the top, you can still feel the warmth of the underground magma. Or how about a walk to the beautiful and hidden beach Stafsnes? Along the way you’ll not only find beautiful views, but also wild puffins.

Day 2 – Travel back to the mainland

If you’re up for doing something special before you leave the islands then visit the beluga whale sanctuary; one of the few reserves in the world that is in open sea water. The bay where the reserve is located is a naturally enclosed bay with enough food for the belugas to thrive. Everything that you spend here goes directly towards helping these gentle giants, so it makes for a particularly rewarding visit. After this meaningful experience, drive back to the ferry port and over to the mainland for you to continue your adventure.
