ItineraryDays 1-4 – Time for Mochlos
As you step foot into this hidden gem of Crete, you will be greeted by white houses with vibrant shutters and blooming bougainvilleas. Mochlos is a quaint fishing village that will instantly make you feel at home. Check into your cosy hotel that boasts breathtaking views over the bay, with pristine a beach just a stone’s throw away. On your first day, take the time to roam the narrow streets of this authentic fishing village at your own pace and indulge in the delights of Greek cuisine, savoring the flavors of the region at the charming taverns that dot the village.
The next day, it’s time to hit the open sea, as you take a boat from from the charming Agios Nikolaos to the captivating island of Spinalonga. Steeped in history, this small island carries the legacy of being a leper colony in the early 20th century. After a few hours exploring the island and its intriguing past, you’ll return to Agios Nikolaos and immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Lake Voulismeni. Alternatively, if you prefer a more leisurely experience, bask in the sun at Voulisma Beach, where you can unwind and soak up the tranquil surroundings. After a relaxing start the following morning, set out to explore the captivating northeast coast, where you will find the palm beach of Vai, home to one of the last remaining primeval palm tree forests on the island.
Days 4-6 – Windmills on the Lassithi plateau
You’ll have already picked up your hire car at Heraklion airport on arrival, so you’re ready and set for the open road! After your stay you’ll drive from Mochlos to Lassithi. The driving time is approx. 1.5 hours, but you may wish to make stops along the way. You’ll arrive on the Lasshiti plateau and immediately feel a refreshing coolness in the air and a relaxed rhythm of life. Leaving the coast behind, you’ll embark on a scenic journey through the meandering roads of the Dikte Mountains and find yourself immersed in the heart of rural Crete, nestled within a protected nature reserve. Time stands still in the villages here, like Tzermiado and Agios Georgios, where you’ll find your traditional guest house. Check in, drop your bags off and head out to one of the local restaurants, where a sumptuous traditional Greek feast awaits your taste buds.
The following day, you will explore what is thought to be first wind farm in Europe. There were once a total of about 15,000 windmills on the plain. Centuries ago, when the Venetians inhabited this captivating island, they recognized the agricultural potential and initiated the cultivation of grain. Ingeniously, they implemented an innovative irrigation system that harnessed the power of the windmills, sculpting the landscape into the remarkable windmill park you see today. Now there are still a number of mills from the 15th century that you can admire. Wander through the green countryside with the fresh scent of the mountain air accompanying you and witness local farmers diligently tending to their land. For avid hikers, there are various hiking routes that wind along overgrown mountain roads, promising breathtaking vistas and unforgettable adventures.
Days 6-9 – Positive vibes at Agia Galini
Today you’ll drive from Lassithi to Agia Galini. The journey time is approx. 2.5 hours. As you arrive in the small fishing village of Agia Galini, get ready to relax for a few days. Spend your mornings savoring a delicious breakfast at your boutique hotel, while contemplating the exciting possibilities that lie ahead. After checking in today, the choice is yours to make. Take a stroll on the sun-kissed beach or head to the quaint streets of the village, ascending the gentle hill that reveals a tapestry of local treasures. Check out one of the charming restaurants, where the tantalizing aroma of freshly prepared dishes using the day’s finest produce will get your taste buds going. Allow yourself to be captivated by the flavours of the region, embracing all the authentic culinary delights.
The next few days are free for you to do as you please. You could take a trip to the nearby coastal haven of Matala. In the 1960s, this seaside resort became a beloved sanctuary for free-spirited hippies, who were lured by the allure of the chalk cliffs, with intricate caves that encompass the beach. Using these caves as a place to sleep, many called this beach their home. The old centre of the village is still car-free, so it’s nice and quiet with an array of souvenir shops, cosy bars and a wide choice of restaurants, all adding to the unique charm of this coastal retreat. It’s also worth the drive to Preveli Beach,a true natural gem that is home to one of Crete’s two remaining primeval palm forests. Walk through the palm grove over rocks, wander amidst rocks, and follow the path along a river that gently merges with the azure sea. A short drive or walk from the beach lies the captivating ruins of Preveli Monastery, offering a panoramic vista of the bay.
Days 9-11 – Hiking the Imbros Gorge
Today you’ll drive from Agia Galini to Chora Skafion. The journey time is approx. 2 hours. You will travel over majestic mountains and along breathtaking gorges, all while catching glimpses of the awe-inspiring Lefka Ori mountains in the distance. The scent of pines and tamarisk will let you know you have arrived in Chora Sfakion. This is the perfect base for a few active days and you will stay in a small hotel with a balcony that has a stunning sea view. It’s within walking distance to the two main streets, charming taverns and the beach. Take the evening to relax and build up some energy for your adventures that await you tomorrow!
After a hearty breakfast this morning, you’ll put on your hiking boots and head to the remarkable Imbros Gorge. This hidden gem, often overshadowed by its larger counterpart, Samaria, offers a quieter and more intimate experience, allowing you to take things at your own pace. We’ll arrange a taxi to take you to the entrance of the gorge. Then, equipped with a hiking map and picnic lunch you will hike through the stunning five-mile canyon. At you emerge from the gorge, freshen up in one of the charming taverns before embarking on the more relaxing 5km stroll back to Chora Sfakion.
Days 11-14 – Golden Chania
Today you’ll drive from Chora Skafion to Chania. The journey time is approx. 1.5 hours. As you arrive into Chania, you’ll be greeted by a special ambiance that reflects the diverse influences of the Venetian, Ottoman, and Egyptian eras. Everywhere you turn, you’ll find brightly coloured mansions, elegant Turkish minarets, and a picturesque harbour that beckons you to explore. Within the old city walls you’ll be transported to a bygone era as you walk under arches through a maze of cosy narrow streets and alleys that lead to the captivating Giali Tzamisi Mosque. Check into your hotel and head out to explore the town. You’ll have a gorgeous swimming pool to come back to when you get tired of walking.
Prepare to lose yourself in the labyrinthine charm of Chania’s winding streets, as you stroll into the old town filled with colourful shops selling locally crafted goods. After a walk through the colourful market hall, grab yourself a frappé (Greek iced coffee) in one of the cafes on the boulevard and enjoy the view of the city’s iconic Egyptian lighthouse at the harbour. If you’d like to explore the area beyond the city walls, venture into the picturesque landscapes of Kolymbari, where endless olive groves and lemon plantations blanket the rolling hills. The olive oil that comes from here is known throughout Europe and we’d recommend tasting it if you have a chance. At the end of your trip you’ll be transferred to the airport and fly back to the UK, with hundreds of beautiful pictures and an unforgettable experience.
