5 Reasons to explore Greece beyond the beach

Blog
Greece is renowned for its rich history, but the natural beauty you'll find there is equally as captivating. With a mix of mountains and beaches, you can include both adventure and relaxation in your Greece holiday. It's also an ideal country to discover at your own pace with a rental car. Read on as we delve into why you should explore Greece beyond the beach...

1. The Monasteries of Meteora

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Meteora is famous for the beautiful monasteries perched atop towering rock pillars. Centuries of wind and water erosion have sculpted a breathtaking natural wonder that should not be missed during your holiday to mainland Greece. In the past, visiting these remote monasteries was challenging, but today, many are accessible via well-marked routes and steps. Once at the summit, you’ll be rewarded with awe-inspiring vistas of the surrounding landscape.

2. Hiking in the Lousios Gorge

The heart of Greece boasts charming villages nestled amidst majestic mountains, offering picturesque views. Dimitsana, a rural mountain village, has remained relatively unchanged over the years and serves as an ideal starting point for exploration. Embark on a journey from monastery to monastery, wandering through forests, crossing ancient bridges, and tracing the path of a meandering stream. We think this is one of the most enchanting hiking routes in all of Greece.

3. The Lesser-Known Cyclades

While the Cyclades Islands are renowned for their beauty, some lesser-known gems, such as Andros and Tinos, offer a more tranquil and nature-focused experience. Imagine island hopping without the crowds, exploring lush landscapes with waterfalls, and meandering through photogenic villages.

Andros has numerous water sources, resulting in a lush, green landscape. Wander past rugged mountains, cascading waterfalls, and dense forests while encountering only a handful of locals. If you’re seeking a blend of pristine natural beauty and authentic Greek village life, set sail for Tinos, where time seems to have stood still, and the hiking routes are truly exceptional.

4. Hidden Gems

Nestled amongst the olive groves in Galatas lies a secluded camp ground just perfect for a unique glamping experience with a view of Poros Island. This tranquil retreat, just a short distance from Athens, provides an escape from its hustle and bustle. The ferry to Poros is close by and in just fifteen minutes, you’ll find yourself on the shores of the island. Follow the coastline and then ascend forest trails to the Temple of Poseidon, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over the island and sea – magnificent!

5. Out on the Open Road

To get the most out of exploring Greece’s natural wonders we would recommend renting your own hire car. The roads are well-maintained and you will have the freedom to stop wherever and whenever you like to take in those stunning landscapes.
