Bite-sized tripDay 1 – Arrival in Athens
After a three and a half hour flight from the UK you’ll arrive at Athens airport. Your driver will be waiting to take you to your hotel in the centre of the capital, where you can settle in and cool off in the pool. The hotel has a modern style and is equipped with air conditioning for those warm nights. There is a metro stop nearby so why not head out and explore the neighbourhood of Plaka at the foot of the Acropolis. This is a great spot to mingle with locals and fellow tourists and get your first taste of traditional Greek dishes.
Day 2 – Explore the city with a local
Together with your English-speaking guide and resident of Athens you will embark on a two-hour city walking today. Explore the excavations underground in the metro stations, where artefacts were uncovered during its construction. Discover hidden spots around the city and get some insider tips from your local guide. The rest of the day is yours to explore as you wish. Climb the Acropolis and take in the impressive views of the city, visit the Acropolis Museum, with displays of many treasures from Athens’ past, or stroll through the city streets stopping for a tasty snack along the way.
Travelling to Athens during July and August?
The temperatures during the summer months in the city can get up to 40 degrees. During this time it is advisable to visit the Acropolis and the ancient Agora only either early in the morning or later in the day when it is cooler and there are fewer tourists around. Opening hours during these months are from 8am to 8pm The Acropolis Museum is closed on Mondays. You can buy a combination ticket at this museum, which gives you access to the museum, the Acropolis, the Temple of Zeus and the ancient city of Agora.
