Snorkelling Coves of Ithaca
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – Arrival in Ithaca
You can travel by boat from Kefalonia to Ithaca in about half an hour. Coming from the mainland instead? The sailing time from Patras is approximately four hours. You’ll arrive into the small port of Pisaetos and in around 15 minutes you’ll arrive in Vathy, the capital of Ithaca. Vathy is full of typical Mediterranean houses, painted in sunny pastel shades of light yellow, blue, pink and mint green, with white shutters and red tiled roofs. The green mountains are the backdrop and fishing boats bob in the harbour. You and your family will stay in an apartment by the sea where you can look out over the water from the swimming pool. The walk to the centre of Vathy is just 10 minutes too so a great spot to base yourselves.
Day 2 – Snorkelling in the underwater world
The sea in Greece has to be seen to be believed. Crystal clear, the fish will dart away from your feet as you wade in and you can see clearly underwater with a mask. Today you will head to one of the most beautiful snorkelling spots on Ithaca with your guide. Head out by boat and dive into the clear water to spot colourful fish, caves, shells and rocks under the surface. You’ll be out for around 2.5 hours, and have the afternoon free to relax at the beach or pool with the kids.
Exploring Ithaca
If you want to explore more of the island, we suggest visiting the quaint villages of Frikes and Kioni with a handful of taverns and relaxed vibe. For spectacular views visit the ancient village of Anogi, up through the green hills on narrow mountain roads. There is not much to do here, but the view is unparalleled. The Kathara Monastery is en route and is also worth a stop.
Day 3 – Departure from Ithaca
Ithaca pairs well with the nearby islands of Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zakynthos, all easily reachable by ferry. If you’re in need of inspiration our family itineraries combine exciting excursions with local accommodation, what more could you need?!
