The most easterly island in the Cyclades, the island of Amorgos seems to have stood still - donkeys, hidden coves and rugged landscapes await. Relatively quiet in comparison to other Greek islands, this is a place to get off the tourist trail and immerse yourself in the authentic villages with blue-and-white houses. Home to the famous Monastery of Hozoviotissa built into the cliff, this island is a must visit on a family trip to the Cyclades.
Family trip to Amorgos - view over the bay

Day 1 – Arrival on the island of Amorgos

About 2.5 hours by ferry from Naxos you will find the undiscovered island of Amorgos. There is no airport here so in comparison to other Greek islands it is fairly quiet. Here you will find authentic rural villages and arid landscapes with windmills dotted along the horizon. Upon arrival at the port, your driver will be waiting to take you to your accommodation. Your family-friendly hotel is located on the quiet sandy beach of Aegiali, in the traditional white and blue architectural style typical of the Cyclades. Due to the long and dry summer months and lack of water here the pool is filled with seawater, perfect for a cooling dip.

Day 2 – Snorkelling trip in Amorgos

Today you and your family will discover the underwater world on a snorkelling trip. Under the watchful eye of your guide, you will take to the water on a zodiac boat. When you arrive at the best snorkelling spots, you’ll jump into the warm Mediterranean sea in search of octopuses, barracudas, eels, coral and plenty of colourful fish.

With azure seas and cystal clear visability this is a great place for snorkelling, your guide will be able to assist and point out the diverse marine life found here.

Day 3 – Free day in Amorgos

With the swimming pool at your accommodation and the beach around the corner, you don’t have to go far today but if you want to stretch your legs, you can climb the stairs from the beach at Aegiali to Langada. You’ll pass olive trees to the Agios Theologos monastery, beautifully situated at the foot of the Mount Krikelos.

The oldest and most impressive monastery on the island is called Moni Hozoviotissis. The white monastery is built against the rockface and dates from the Byzantine period (1088). It is a tough climb up 800 steps so we don’t recommend doing it with small children (under 8 years old). Once you arrive at the monastery (closed between 1pm and 5pm), you will be welcomed by the monks with a cold glass of water and typical Greek sweets. To visit the monastery you are expected to dress conservatively by covering your shoulders and legs.

Day 4 – Departure from Amorgos

After breakfast and even a last refreshing dip in the pool, it is time to leave Amorgos behind. From here you can travel to the volcanic island of Santorini with its black lava beaches and photogenic villages on top of the crater rim.
