Chora Sfakion is a small village by the sea, with mountains and gorges as its backdrop. If you and the family are looking to get active then a hike through the Imbros Gorge is just the thing. Less busy than the well-known Samaria Gorge, this area boasts beautiful scenery and tranquil surroundings.
Village in Crete

Day 1 – Arrival in Chora Sfakion

The road to Chora Sfakion is winding, and as you drive through the mountains, which are quite arid in the summer months, you’ll see the coast come into view. If you are coming from Agia Galini you can drive to Chora Sfakion in about two hours along the coast, sandwiched between the sea and the mountains. Just before you arrive into Chora Sfakion you can have lunch on the beach at Frangokastello. The fort of the same name towers above the village and was built from 1371 onwards as protection against pirates. Once you arrive into Chora Sfakion, you can park your car in the square and walk the last few metres to your hotel as the village is car-free. Your accommodation here is bright and spacious, with a balcony overlooking the sea. There’s no pool here but the sea is just a short stroll away.

Day 2 – Hike the Imbros Gorge

Today it’s time to grab the family and lace up your walking shoes. Crete is renowned for its stunning gorges, with the Samaria Gorge being the most famous. Since it is a relatively challenging trek spanning 18 kilometres, we recommend its little brother, the Imbros Gorge. This option is slightly less popular, resulting in fewer crowds and you can stroll at your own pace, this is particularly advised during the warmer summer months.

We will arrange a taxi to transport you to the gorge’s entrance where you’ll be given a hiking map and a picnic lunch, before setting off on the 8-kilometre descent through the gorge, passing impressive rock formations along the way. The walk will take you around 2.5 hours, depending on your pace and how often you stop of course, but the path is generally easy underfoot and good for children. Upon exiting the gorge, you can freshen up at one of the quaint tavernas, and then jump in a taxi back to your hotel, or walk the last 5kms if you prefer!

Day 3 – Departing Chora Sfakion

Today you will leave Chora Sfakion and continue your journey through Crete. If you need some inspiration planning your trip, check out our Crete itinerary or get in touch with our Greece family specialists to plan your own.
