Cooking together on a family trip to Vamos

Day 1 – Arrival in Vamos

Vamos is centrally located in the western part of Crete, between Chania and Agia Galini. The travel time from Chania is about an hour and from Agia Galini about 1.5 hours. A typical rural village, Vamos is hidden up in the mountains – away from the crowds of the coast. You will stay in an authentic stone house in the village, and although recently renovated, it retains its local charm. In the evening you can enjoy delicious Cretan food in one of the tavernas.

Day 2 – Cooking workshop

Your morning today is free for you to spend as you wish, walk to the local bakery and explore village life, or take a dip in the pool – the choice is yours. This afternoon you will meet a local chef to learn how to cook traditional Greek dishes in a beautiful old olive oil mill. You’ll use all locally-produced or grown ingredients to prepare a variety of Greek and Cretan dishes. Once everything is ready you’ll sit down together as a family to enjoy the fruits of your labour. Enjoy!

Day 3 – Exploring the area

The rest of your time is free to explore the local area or enjoy the pool at your guesthouse. For beach lovers, Almirida Beach, Koutals Beach, or Omprogialos can be easily reached within 20 minutes. The bay nestled between Chania and Koutalas experiences minimal wind, and the beaches are well-equipped with loungers. As you venture further east, the wind picks up, creating an ideal spot for windsurfing. For those looking for more leisurely activities, a scenic half-hour drive will take you to Lake Kournas, where you can kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or hire a small boat.

Day 3 – Continue travelling through Crete

After breakfast it is time to pack up the car and continue on your family trip through Crete. Chora Sfakion is a great spot for some adventure with a hike through the famous Imbros Gorge. If you are looking for beaches then Agia Galini is the ideal place for some relaxation.
