Agia Galini is a picturesque village in the south of Crete where white houses are built against the mountainside and the bright blue sea glistens in the Mediterranean sunshine. Enjoy locally brewed raki in one of the tavernas, take a boat to Preveli beach and cool off in the pool. This is what Greek family holidays are all about!
Boat in harbour on a family trip to Agia Galini

Day 1 – Arrival in Agia Galini

Agia Galini is about a 1.5 hour drive from Vamos through the green mountains of Crete. Narrow roads, sheep crossing, and rural villages punctuate your journey. In the summer Agia Galini gets very busy and it can be tricky to find parking so we recommend parking on the edge of the village and walking the remainder of the way to your accommodation. Your hotel has spacious rooms and apartments with a swimming pool overlooking the sea.

Day 2 & 3 – Exploring Agia Galini and beyond

There are no excursions planned during your time here so you can do as much or as little as you like. Start with a leisurely breakfast at your hotel, full of delicious local products whilst the children play, then head out to explore. If you are looking for a bit of history, Agia Galini is where Icarus and Daedalus escaped the wrath of King Minos –  their statues now stand on the rock looking out over the sea. Next door you will find the amphitheatre, where performances take place in the summer.

Beach lovers will find plenty of nearby spots perfect for lazy days spent playing in the surf. Preveli boasts a stunning palm-fringed beach, featuring a river that flows into the sea and a sixteenth-century monastery. Accessible by boat from the port at Agia Galini, this beach offers a fun spot to spend the day. Matala, renowned for its distinctive location nestled between chalk cliffs and intriguing caves, is another excellent spot to explore with the family.

Day 4 – Departure from Agia Galini
