Taking the family with Rickshaw

At Rickshaw, we know how stressful it can be organising a family holiday away and there are a number of different worries or concerns that come into play. We feel it’s important to address these concerns so we’ve listed them below to help ease your mind as parents. Our travel specialists in each of our destinations can assist you with any further queries, so please don’t hesitate to ask when we are planning your family holiday.

24/7 support and a friendly face on arrival

We know that after a long flight, arriving in a new country with children can be a bit of a military operation. To make sure you arrive without having to worry about where to go, a local representative will be waiting for you at the airport to take you to your hotel. We’ll make sure the booster seats are in place so all you need to do is take in your new surroundings. Our English speaking local partners in each country will also be on hand 24/7 if you have any queries or issues, giving you peace of mind during your family holiday. We recommend grabbing some water for the car, and a few snacks on hand to keep the kids happy.

Flying with children

Going on a long haul flight with young children can be a daunting and stressful experience. The flight takes hours and the children can get bored. There are a number of flight options depending on where you’re going and your travel specialist will be the best person to help you decide on who to fly with. Our suggestions are to travel as direct as possible and choose a flight with a great in-flight entertainment system. We’ll be able to pre-book your seats (where possible) and any special meals to make sure the whole experience is as pleasurable as possible for the whole family.

Getting around the country

Across all of our destinations, we offer a range of different transports and your travel specialist will be able to discuss and choose which is best for your family. If you’re happy to have a bit of adventure, let your kids experience the comfortable sleeper trains in Thailand where they can meet locals or other travellers for a meaningful experience. Or take a self-drive journey in Costa Rica, giving you plenty of flexibility to stop and take breaks or pictures along the way. We’ve found the key to travelling with kids is to keep them busy. Bring that tablet and make up a game or challenge. Whatever makes them happy.

From fish fingers to curries

One of the best things about travelling with your family is watching the kids’ faces light up when they try new food. If your children aren’t that adventurous when it comes to food this can be a stressful time for you. The majority of restaurants in our destinations offer a range of food, including western dishes. If that fails, rice and ketchup is always a good alternative! If you’re worried about this before you travel though, just let us know and we can inform the local partner ahead of your trip. We can also provide you with allergy translation cards to help when eating out at restaurants. Just let us know how we can help.

Homely accommodation

We pride ourselves on choosing locally owned hotels that have a personal feel and support the local community. Where possible we have sourced family or interconnecting rooms in most destinations. When booking with your travel specialist, they’ll be able to run through the options in each place with you. We’ve found it is best to have a hotel with a swimming pool to cool everyone down after a busy day, as well as air conditioning for a good night’s sleep.

Health and safety in your destination

When it comes to health and safety in whichever destination you decide on, the main thing is preparation and common sense. Once you know where you’re going, the best thing to do is go and speak to your family doctor who can check the most up-to-date travel information. You may need some injections and malaria tablets. The second thing to do is stock up on Immodium, tissues, vitamin C tablets and a whole host of your favourite medicine.
