Unique experiences in Cuba’s Casas Particulares
BlogWarm welcomes
Being hosted in a local Casa Particular in Cuba is one of the (many) highlights of my time in Cuba. It is just like staying in a B&B in the UK, with friendly smiles and warm welcomes. You are given your own lockable private room with en-suite facilities and a key to come and go as you please. There is no curfew so you can stay out salsa dancing (or trying to!) until late without having to worry about disturbing anyone.
Practise the lingo
You will not have to sit around with the hosts (unless you want to of course – in which case a Spanish phrasebook or basic level will be useful) and are free to come and go as you please just like a British guest house. If you are lucky enough to speak the lingo you’ll be able to take the opportunity to fulfil your curiosity and chat with family members about their views on life in Cuba. I found this to be intriguing and a highlight of my stay each time I have travelled to Cuba.
Home cooked meals
Most of our customers return saying that the Casas were their preferred accommodation and/or the highlight of their holiday in Cuba, whether they could speak a word of Spanish or not. As we all know, Cuba isn’t known for its gastronomical delights but in the Casas Particulares you’ll be served delicious home cooked meals, better than any meals found in the government-run hotel restaurants. Meals are served on beautiful courtyards or rooftop terraces, perhaps with another couple in the other spare room for company. They will usually ask you in the morning what you want for dinner and arrange a time for it to be ready.
Experience the ‘real’ Cuba
Often homes appear very simple on the outside but can lead out into grand courtyards with a few reception rooms which are interestingly and beautifully adorned. Some have various family members of all ages living at home whereas others may just be run by a single person. It offers a unique travel experience and authentic insight into the real lives of Cubans as their country is undergoing many changes.
